Somerford Youth and Community Centre
Somerford Youth and Community Centre is run and managed by Christchurch Open Awards Centre (COAC), a charity that was set up to take over the centre when it was handed over to community ownership by the previous owners, Dorset County Council, in 2016. COAC works in partnership with Christchurch Activities for Young People (CAYP). CAYP has been running services, projects and activities in Somerford and across the wider Christchurch area since 2006 as part of a Local Authority scheme. In 2011 CAYP became independent and set up as a, not for profit Community Interest Company run by the community. In 2016 CAYP developed Christchurch Open Awards Centre as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and a registered charity to take over the ownership, management and running of Somerford Youth Club – now Somerford Youth and Community Centre. CAYP continue to be actively involved in delivering the youth focussed activities and projects at the centre.
Since 2016 the services and resources developed at the centre for the community have increased rapidly as a direct result of what local need is and what the community want from the centre.
